As an experiment I added iPad versions of all the panos from my trip to Alaska last Fall.

Here is an iPad-compatible pano: http://tinyurl.com/24jdmv4
And here is a page with links for each of the panos in three formats: http://tinyurl.com/4t8xuoy

In all I did about 550 for my virtual guidebooks to Alaska, Yukon, and British Columbia, plus another hundred or so of San Francisco. It took me several days. I had to manually set initial pan for each one, but most of the time was spent waiting for large batches of files to run, and big uploads to my server.

I used Pano2VR (http://gardengnomesoftware.com/pano2vr.php) to generate the folders full of files and the xml pages. I used the html generated by Pano2VR as a model and created a variation on my normal standard-size pano page. It uses php and the filename to load the html5 version instead of the normal Flash.

I used Garden Gnome's "simplex" skin for the controls, modifying it slightly by spreading the buttons further apart (for less error-prone fingertip clicking) and moving the text tips above the buttons (so they are not hidden by your finger). Normally I abhor putting navigation on top of a pano, but touch-screens are different. Plus, with the iPad we may be reaching an entirely new demographic not familiar with VR. Also for this reason I included both VR-style and Streetview-style navigation, switchable with one of the on-screen buttons.

These test panos look terrific on an iPad. They will run on Safari on a Mac also, but panning is very jerky. I have purposely not included versions for iPhone because I feel the display size is just too small to be appropriate for my panos, which are typically big landscapes. The display-size issue is exacerbated by the presence of navigation controls on top of the image, and my insistence on captions.

The process for adding these iPad versions was not too arduous, and I can easily integrate html5 into my production process for new panos. But I am going to wait a while to see what further progress may be made in the next year or so. I am hoping for a "single link" solution, where the client device determines which version is sent and how it is displayed.
