Put me in the camp of people uncomfortable with the suggested "European version" of the
WWP website.
When the suggestion was first made I took a quick look and thought "that looks nice". I
assumed each of the event listings linked to the WWP site. After reading these comments I
went back and followed the links and discovered that wasn't the case.
Let me put it this way ? I have a high volume commercial site as well (www.inetours.com)
and am very familiar with search engine optimization and all the advantages of lots of
content. Would the group mind if I were to do something similar on my site? I wouldn't
actually steal anyones panoramas (just the thumbnails) and wouldn't use my own
bandwidth to host the images. I'd just produce a bunch of pages (to improve my own page
rank and have many more pages for my own ads) with thumbnails and links to individual
WWP pages.
I would imagine this would not go well with the group for the reasons that Caroling Geary
has already stated. In addition I believe that if this idea is implemented we run the risk of
not only confusing people as to who and what the WWP is but run a real risk of reducing
the WWP's Google rank. The reason being that while a single link from sites with similar
content will boost page rank it's possible that something this extensive might be seen as
duplicate content or doorway pages.
So if it were just the first page with links to the WWP site event pages I have no concerns,
but if it were to be as mocked up - count me out. I would also think long and hard about
whether to participate in future WWP events.
